Cartoon animals and splashy, comic-book-style layouts help teach kids emotional awareness and vocabulary in these entries in the Kid's Guide to Feelings series. Each volume opens with a situation that makes the starring superhero-costumed creature feel an emotion, and after some explanations about body language and physical responses, as well as suggestions for coping mechanisms, the story concludes with the character feeling better. Feeling Afraid follows Agent Afraid, a koala who's scared of the dark. Although the comics-style layout, incorporating bold colors and photos of expressive kids, is eye-catching and engaging, it's occasionally busy enough that some information might get a little lost. Still, the matter-of-fact tone, discussion of the evolutionary origins of feelings, and close look at how bad feelings, like anger or fear, can be beneficial will likely help young readers feel more comfortable when they experience big emotions and give them tools to both talk about and cope with feelings.--Sarah Hunter Copyright 2018 Booklist |
